Wellbeing
At West Wallsend High School, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your young person needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

Our IGNITE program
What is the IGNITE program?
A high-level case management program which aims to respond to the individual story of each Year 12 student at point of need. The program focuses on wellbeing + motivation + attendance + academic supports + aspirations + personalised learning supports.
IGNITE provides additional support for Year 12 students including extracurricular booster sessions, study periods and study days, monitoring of attendance and effort across the cohort, and student-selected mentors and mentoring sessions.
What is an IGNITE profile?
Each Year 12 student has a unique profile which is updated every two weeks based on attendance and effort. It contains the student's ultimate goal, mentor's name, strengths, the subjects they have chosen and any updates along the way. It is one of the many ways we stay connected and support our Year 12 students through their final year of schooling.
What is the IGNITE wall?
The IGNITE wall displays the IGNITE profiles of all students in Year 12 and is located in the principal's office. Students and/or IGNITE coordinators update the profiles at least once a fortnight using a traffic light system. Students are encouraged to take ownership and accountability for their attendance, effort, learning & wellbeing. Profiles are coded for easy access of information.
Positive behaviour for learning (PBL)
Our positive behaviour for learning (PBL) expectations of:
- Respect
- Responsibility
- Excellence
are the foundation values upon which all our expectations are based. Students are encouraged to demonstrate these values in all areas of their school life.
Staff recognise students who are observed displaying these values over and above normal school expectations through a number of different methods:
- Electronic GOTCHA
- RRE award
- High achiever award
These awards accrue points that lead to major awards.
