Religion and ethics

NSW schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics. Approved providers deliver these, where available.

At West Wallsend High School, SRE is delivered on Mondays and Wednesdays. This semester SRE is delivered to year 7 and 8 students one period per timetable cycle.

On enrolment parents/carers will be provided with an SRE participation letter to complete and return to office staff. After the initial enrolment, notification of changes to a child's enrolment in SRE should be provided in writing to the school.

The following SRE classes are offered at West Wallsend High School:

Thanks to the support of the combined churches of the Hunter our school is able to offer classes in Special Religious Education (SRE), which is not linked to any specific denomination. The program allows students the chance to discuss, question, think and ultimately make decisions for themselves regarding the Christian faith. SRE classes are delivered by Lysander Lawrence (provider: Baptist Union of NSW) using the WBCEA Discovery Curriculum. Further information may be found at https://nswactbaptists.org.au/authorised-sre-curriculum/.

During the time that SRE classes are being held, students not attending will be located in a separate space with their usual timetabled teacher. They will participate in meaningful activities such as reading, revision and independent study (completing homework or working on upcoming tasks). Students who participate in SRE will not in any way be disadvantaged regarding their normal class time as the curriculum will not progress during SRE.

Write to the school if you wish to withdraw your child from special religious education, sometimes known as scripture. Special education in ethics is an option for your primary-age child if you withdraw them from special religious education. For more information, visit Religion and ethics.
